Historical relevance of location
This mine is the largest producer of magnesite in Russia and the CIS (more than 98 % of the annual production).

Geological relevance of location
The outcrops around Satka are the type locality of the Satka Formation. The mineralization of the stratiform magnesite ore bodies is closely associated with the carbonate producing sedimentary basin but subsequent in time to the diagenetic dolomitization of the host rocks.
