Historical relevance of location
The Mwea-Tebere Irrigation Scheme is located in the Mwea plains and consists of black, clayey alluvial soils (Vertisol). In the time of the independence fight of the Mau-Mau the area was used by the British Colonial Government as a labour camp for prisoners of war. During this time an area of ca. 8000 ha was prepared for a rice irrigation scheme. After the independence of Kenya 1963 the land was offered to the former prisoners to become farmers. The Irrigation Scheme is managed as a co-operative society. Today it is the largest rice cultivation area in Kenya.
