Name
Etoscha National Park, Etosha Pan, Namibia, Afrika

Historical relevance of location
Etosha lies in the north of Namibia and covers an area of about 22 500 km2. It is one of the largest national parks in Africa and rich in animals and plants. In 1907 the Governor of German South West Africa, von Lindequist, declared the area as a national park.

Geological relevance of location
The *pan* is the bottom of a large shallow inland lake, which dried out. Long-term climatic changes were responsible. In this process the sandy clay became brackish. During the rainy seasons water flows from outside into the flat pan. In places where the water has now evaporated, a saline crust has formed.
