Name
Gondwana-Station of the Federal Institute for Geosciences and Natural Resources, Terra Nova, Antarctica, Antarktika

Political relevance of location
The sample was taken during a research expedition (GANOVEX V 1988/89) for an environmental impact analysis of the German Gondwana Station.

Geological relevance of location
The geology on the Gondwana Station area is dominated by glacial tills. The station area was coverd by ice several times, therefore glacial till covers the surface. The till deposits consist of gravel, rock debris and boulders of granite and gneiss. Clay is ocassionally preserved in small depressions. In the entire area polygon structures can be seen. On young deposits as Campell-Moraine such polygones are only faintly preserved. Solid baserock occurs on the Gondwana station area on three parts. The largest solid rock area is the Cape Möbius. On this area no lichens and mosses occcured and it was therefore chosen as camp site.
