The Marmitte dei Giganti became known for a terrible land-slide at June 4, 1618 and is known for numerous sites of small-scale steatite mining for the \'pots of Plurs\'. It hosts several exposures of rock engraving.

Geological relevance of location
Marmitte dei Gigante forms part of the Chiavenna ophiolite (ancient oceanic crust of the Jurassic Tethys Sea). The local name is derived from the numerous glacier mills in the area.
