Geological relevance of location
Heavy-mineral deposit, here rich in ilmenite and zircon. Heavy-mineral deposits are local enrichments of selected heavy and resistant mineral grains (often including gold) which are generated by weathering of rocks and subsequent reworking and deposition of the rock debris. In some cases heavy-mineral deposits are mined (ore deposit). This sample was taken from an eluvial deposit which was generated from the weathering residuals of a surfacing granite in Sierra Leone close to the coastline.
