Sauria Buttress, Pioneers Escarpment, Shackleton Range, Antarctica, Antarktika

Personal relationship of donor
Geological field work was carried out in this area during the GEISHA Expedition (Geological Expedition to the Shackleton Range, 1986/87)

Geological relevance of location
Fuchsite quartzite of the Pioneers Group. Fuchsite is a bright-green, chromium-rich mica which colours the otherwise beige quartzite. The fuchsite quartzite forms a marker horizon in the northern Shackleton Range and can be traced from nunatak to nunatak for about 150 km.

Classification of the earth
Structure Fuchsite-quartzite (ground)
Colour green
Age Probably 400 - 600 million years old. This might be the age of the metamorphic event, but the age of the deposition of the sands (possibly dune sands) is much higher. The former sands where turned into quartzite by diagenetic and metamorphic processes.
