Political relevance of location
The Federal Institute for Geosciences and Natural Resources (BGR, Bundesanstalt für Geowissenschaften und Rohstoffe) is the central geoscientific institution of the German Government. It is subordinate to the Federal Ministry for Economics and Technology. The BGR advises the Federal Ministries, providing data on issues related to natural resources, the applied geosciences, and geoscientific aspects of environmental conservation and resources protection. In addition, the BGR conducts projects at home and abroad, especially in the developing countries, on behalf of the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation (BMZ). BGR is also responsible for research and development work in the applied geosciences and for representing the Federal Republic of Germany on international committees. The Geological Survey of Lower Saxony (NLfB) carries out investigations in the fields of geology, soil science, hydrology, engineering geology, mining geology, and geophysics and evaluates the results so that they can be made effective use of by industry, science, and government authorities.
