Historical relevance of location
In the Middle Ages, metals were won by smelting ores at many sites in the Harz. Slag was also produced and much of the area was contaminated with heavy metals. Northwest of the Harz Mts., the flood plains of rivers draining abandoned mining and smelting sites show a high degree of pollution.
