Name
Rüdersdorf, Brandenburg, Germany, Europa
Historical relevance of location
November 3, 1875, is viewed as the beginning of the \"modern\" period of Ice Age research in Central Europe. The Swedish geologist Otto Torell interpreted scratches on limestone at Rüdersdorf as traces left by a glacier. Previously, these \"diluvium\" sediments were considered to be \"normal\" marine deposits. A monument to Torell was erected in Rüdersdorf in 1895.
Geological relevance of location
Interesting minerals (e.g., celestine) and many fossils (e.g., saurians, crinoids, ammonites) have been found in Rüdersdorf. The limestone has been a popular building stone and also often used for making cement, especially for the town of Berlin.
