Geological relevance of location
Gravel and sand were deposited in front of the ice sheet in northern Germany during the Pleistocene glaciations. They are an important raw material for the construction industry. The glacial deposits of N. Germany contain much rock material clearly derived from the north and some from the south, such as this specimen of petrified wood from the Mehlfien gravel pit.
